Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Office of Admissions at Iowa State University is seeking applications for an Assistant Director of New Student Programs (NSP). Join a dynamic team responsible for the innovation, planning and implementation of Orientation and Destination Iowa State, serving 8,500 new students and 16,000 guests, as well as collaborating with 550 student leaders each year. Be a part of creating an exciting adventure that is key to new student success and retention at Iowa State.

This position coordinates the development, implementation, and assessment of the University Orientation programs and the Destination Iowa State programs, both designed to prepare all new undergraduate students for their academic, social, and personal transition to Iowa State University. These programs are critical to student success and retention, as well as a key factor for promoting inclusion in our campus community. A main responsibility is the supervision of professional and support staff as well as undergraduate students and graduate assistants, which includes hiring, training, motivating, evaluating, and is a key member of the leadership of New Student Programs. Associated responsibilities include committee service and leadership; budget management; development of publications, PowerPoint and video presentations, and web sites; and direct interaction with students and families in the form of presentations, facilitation of panels, event coordination and counseling of prospective undergraduate students and families.

The successful candidate will possess high energy and enthusiasm; a student-centered work philosophy; strong supervisory skills; excellent organizational skills; outstanding written and oral communication skills including public speaking; an understanding of the value of higher education; an understanding of purpose and philosophy of new student programs; and an understanding of student success and transition issues. The candidate must be able to work under pressure and handle multiple tasks at the same time as well as work outside of regular work schedule as necessary throughout the year.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree and 2 years of related experience; OR a combination of education and/or related experience totaling 8 years unless otherwise specified under supplemental required education and experience. Experience must be at a comparable level and directly related to the duties of this position.
